BENEVOLENCE
Deuteronomy 15:11..... There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.
Judges 19:20 "....You are welcome at my house," the old man said. "Let me supply whatever you need. Only don't spend the night in the square."
Nehemiah 8:10 .....Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." 11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, "Be still, for this is a sacred day. Do not grieve."
Psalm 41:1.... Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the LORD delivers him in times of trouble. 112:9 He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor, his righteousness endures forever; his horn will be lifted high in honor.
Matthews 5:42 ....Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Matthews 19:21 ....Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me
Matthews 25:35,36.... For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
Acts 2:46.... Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
Acts 10:4. 6-9.... Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.
So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. But just as you excel in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us--see that you also excel in this grace of giving. I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.
Giving
BY
Khalil Gibran

Then said a rich man, "Speak to us of Giving."
And he answered:
You give but little when you give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.
For what are your possessions but things you keep and guard for fear you may need them tomorrow?
And tomorrow, what shall tomorrow bring to the overprudent dog burying bones in the trackless sand as he follows the pilgrims to the holy city?
And what is fear of need but need itself?
Is not dread of thirst when your well is full, thirst that is unquenchable?
There are those who give little of the much which they have - and they give it for recognition and their hidden desire makes their gifts unwholesome.
And there are those who have little and give it all.
These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty.
There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward.
And there are those who give with pain, and that pain is their baptism.
And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor give with mindfulness of virtue;
They give as in yonder valley the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space.
Though the hands of such as these God speaks, and from behind their eyes He smiles upon the earth.
It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding;
And to the open-handed the search for one who shall receive is joy greater than giving
And is there aught you would withhold?
All you have shall some day be given;
Therefore give now, that the season of giving may be yours and not your inheritors'.
You often say, "I would give, but only to the deserving."
The trees in your orchard say not so, nor the flocks in your pasture.
They give that they may live, for to withhold is to perish.
Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and his nights is worthy of all else from you.
And he who has deserved to drink from the ocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream.
And what desert greater shall there be than that which lies in the courage and the confidence, nay the charity, of receiving?
And who are you that men should rend their bosom and unveil their pride, that you may see their worth naked and their pride unabashed?
See first that you yourself deserve to be a giver, and an instrument of giving.
For in truth it is life that gives unto life - while you, who deem yourself a giver, are but a witness.
And you receivers - and you are all receivers - assume no weight of gratitude, lest you lay a yoke upon yourself and upon him who gives.
Rather rise together with the giver on his gifts as on wings;
For to be overmindful of your debt, is to doubt his generosity who has the free-hearted earth for mother, and God for father.

ReplyDelete"Matthews 5:42 ....Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this scripture before and for some reason it's tugging at me. ......
and as you listed in the first scripture in Deuteronomy 15:11, "there will always be poor in the land".....more and more people are falling on hard times by the hour and when it hits at home what do you do when in the same day or two you're faced with a group of your friends as well as family all in dire need? not to mention the strangers that cross your path that are in need and everyone need deep pockets.
I'm glad I'm going to the house of prayer today, I'm going to pray at the alter and let the Lord speak to me......Joyce thanks you for sharing this blog....I needed this, enjoy your day.....harry
Yes, this definitely a good one for today especially. With everything going on with Ike, we must remember to help our fellow man/woman in their time of need and their need is great right now. May God watch over them all!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog, my friend!
Sistah...I can't help but think that the things we throw away can help those during Hurricane season, and people who are less fortunate than we are. We ahve become such a selfish nation...smh
ReplyDeleteGod doesn't like it, I just know it...
Thanks for sharing this with me...
Harry, it is true, we can't help everyone, but God wants us to share, to give as we would be givng to HIM.
ReplyDeleteLoving your neighbor as yourself means not letting them suffer when you can help them. We say we love God...now it's time to prove it.
Thanks for your wise words....
Exactly, Doubtfire. God wants His people to show up, just like the govt.
